Sometime in the 1950s, a tourist pointed a camera at the inner walls of the Cité de Carcassonne and captured what a medieval military architect would have considered a routine Tuesday. The conical-roofed tower, the corbelled wooden hoarding running along the curtain wall, the arrow loops placed at intervals that once made tactical sense — all of it is still standing, which was not supposed to happen. Viollet-le-Duc spent the better part of the nineteenth century reconstructing the place from a ruin, and the result is so complete that visitors in the postwar decades had to consciously remind themselves they were looking at a restoration rather than something that had simply persisted.
The brown door fitted under the old Romanesque arch handles the detail that no medieval garrison ever had to think about: visitor management. By the 1950s the Cité had been a UNESCO-adjacent heritage monument long enough for someone to have decided that a modern door was the correct solution to the problem of people wandering in. The small notice fixed to it — presumably explaining hours, entry fees, or both — represents the entire distance between a fortification built to keep people out by force and one that does it with a laminated sign.
What the camera caught, without meaning to, was the central paradox of postwar heritage tourism: a site that survived eight centuries of war, siege, and neglect nearly intact, and now required a rope line and a ticket booth to survive the French summer holiday.
