A whitewashed cottage with a steeply pitched thatch roof sits beyond a small overgrown stream, the whole ensemble so thoroughly wrapped in ivy and wild vegetation that the building appears to be losing a slow battle with the landscape it inhabits. This is the kind of rural English or Welsh property that in the post-war years represented either picturesque heritage or stubborn resistance to maintenance—depending on one's bank account and philosophy of upkeep. The neon sign visible in the upper right corner suggesting some form of commercial enterprise adds an unresolved note of purpose: someone owned this place, intended it for business, and either let the garden reclaim it or never got around to clearing it in the first place. The deep still water and lily pads in the foreground, the moss-covered stones, the total green profusion—all of it speaks to a structure that has been left to the English climate's patient, verdant mercy. What the photographer found charming about decay, the owner may well have found tiresome.
