On the image

A person in the 1970s stood on a ridge or high vantage point and pointed a camera into a river valley below to capture what they believed was a beautiful landscape: dense deciduous forest rolling across hillsides, a river or creek winding through cleared pasture land, the kind of pastoral American view that had already begun to disappear into development and consolidation even as tourists and weekend photographers were still treating it as permanent. The colour saturation and the faded cyan sky suggest Kodachrome film stock, the choice of someone who trusted the process to render the world as they understood it—which is to say, more vivid and more orderly than it actually was. The composition is honest in its formlessness: no singular point, no dramatic gesture, just an ordinary person who saw a valley and assumed that seeing it was enough to preserve it. The rock outcrop on the left anchors nothing; the pastures divide the scene without organizing it. What they captured instead was exactly what was about to be lost: a working landscape that assumed both forest and farm could coexist indefinitely, and that a citizen could stand on a hill and know the land's shape.
