Carved sometime in the twelfth century and photographed in the 1950s, this doorway jamb has been doing the same job for eight hundred years: convincing anyone about to enter that the people inside knew things they didn't. The figures stacked along the archivolt — saints, angels, a narrative scene of small robed figures in what reads as an Annunciation or Presentation grouping — were the era's illustrated Bible for an audience that couldn't read, which was most of the audience. The mason who cut them worked without expecting a byline and got none.
The great ribbed rope molding that frames the arch is the visual grammar of high Romanesque France, the kind of stonework associated with the Loire Valley or Burgundy, where workshops refined these forms in the eleventh and twelfth centuries into something that still looks expensive. The massive iron-strapped wooden door at the right edge has been absorbing the same weather since roughly the same period.
By the 1950s, photographing cathedral portals had become the architectural equivalent of a pilgrimage — tourists and scholars alike pointing cameras at doorways with the conviction that geometry plus saints equaled a meaningful afternoon. The camera caught what eight centuries of visitors had already decided was worth the trip.
