Sometime in the 1950s, a photographer stood close enough to a medieval church portal to make the stonework fill the frame, which is exactly the right instinct. The carved figures along the archivolt and column capitals — angels, saints, robed figures in the elongated Romanesque manner — were cut by craftsmen who understood that most people approaching the door would never get this close, that the theology was meant to be felt rather than read, and that God presumably did not require accurate human proportions.
The stone is two-toned: the lower courses weathered and lichen-stained to a warm ochre, the upper moldings restored or replaced to a sharp clean white, which is how a church tells you, without a placard, exactly which century trusted its own judgment enough to intervene. The ironwork hinge on the heavy wooden door at the left — the kind of scrolled ironwork that took a blacksmith a week and was meant to last forever — has outlasted most of the surrounding context without being asked to.
The portal style and figural treatment point to a French Romanesque church, possibly in the Loire Valley or Burgundy, where this kind of multi-columned doorway with inhabited capitals was refined to its highest form. Whoever stood here with a camera in the 1950s was doing what tourists had always done at this door: looking up at a message carved for the illiterate and finding they still needed a moment to work out what it meant.
