Sometime in the 1950s, someone drove up a curving gravel approach to a large neoclassical mansion and decided the building was worth recording, which was a reasonable conclusion given that whoever built it had installed six full-height Ionic columns and a temple pediment, the standard 19th-century American shorthand for 'we have arrived and would like architecture to confirm it.' The fallen leaves across the lawn date the visit to late autumn, the bare trees doing nothing to soften the building's conviction that it belongs on a Roman hill rather than the American Midwest or mid-Atlantic countryside. A dark automobile sits almost apologetically beneath the portico, the first generation of car owners who could simply drive to the front door of such a house rather than arriving by carriage, though the house had plainly been designed for an era when that distinction mattered enormously. Buildings like this were erected by industrialists and railroad men who understood that a Greek temple facade communicated permanence and seriousness to anyone who came up the drive, and who were not wrong about that, even if the civilization they were invoking had been dead for two thousand years. By the 1950s, houses of this scale were already becoming institutional — converted to schools, clubs, or county offices — which is possibly why someone felt the record needed to be made.
