Kamenita vrata — the Stone Gate, the only surviving medieval gateway into Zagreb's Upper Town — frames a pedestrian walking toward it in the midday sun, while someone crouches in the foreground over a task of no apparent urgency. The gateway has been a pilgrimage site since a fire in 1731 reportedly left a devotional painting of the Virgin unburned; by the 1950s it had survived five centuries of Austro-Hungarian administration, two Yugoslav reorganizations, and a world war, which may explain why nobody walking through it looks particularly impressed.
The street itself is Gornji Grad at its most characteristic: baroque townhouses with deep stone foundations and wooden casement windows, walls that haven't been rendered since the Habsburg era, a neighborhood that managed to be both continuously inhabited and gradually ignored. Under Tito, Zagreb was a functioning capital of a socialist republic, which meant the old quarter was maintained just enough to stay useful and not enough to become a monument.
The blue street sign on the upper right is legible enough to read 'Croatia' — confirming the republic's name as it appeared on municipal signage of the period — which is exactly the kind of bureaucratic detail a street sign gets right even when everything else is ambiguous.
