Off by default. Turning it on lets the image respond to your cursor with a shallow sense of depth, rebuilt from a depth map computed when the image was catalogued. It is an interpretation for looking, not a measured 3D model — and it falls back to the flat image where the browser can't render it.

On the image

Somewhere warm enough to require a white long-sleeve shirt worn as a concession to respectability rather than comfort, an older man stands in profile with his gaze dropped, the coral or limestone wall behind him and the broad-leafed tropical plants suggesting Florida, the Caribbean, or somewhere else Americans were just beginning to visit with regularity once commercial air travel made it possible to be on a beach by Thursday.

The pen clipped to his breast pocket is the detail that dates him most precisely — not the glasses, not the thinning white hair, but that single ballpoint carried as a matter of course, the way men of his generation kept one on them at all times on the reasonable assumption that something might need to be signed. He is unhurried, possibly between obligations, and completely unaware the camera is on him.

Whoever took this caught him in the unguarded posture of a man who has stopped performing for the moment — head down, weight settled, the tropical backdrop entirely lost on him. The vacation, such as it is, appears to be proceeding without his full participation.
