Christmas morning, 1950s: a toddler sits in the wreckage of the gift-opening, surrounded by torn wrapping paper, scattered boxes, and a Fisher-Price pull toy with its bright primary-color wheels, having concluded that the shoe or toy he is currently gnawing on is more interesting than anything else under the tree. The adults, who spent weeks selecting and wrapping these presents, are not in the frame, which is how it always goes.

The living room floor in a 1950s American household on December 25th looked exactly like this — a gray braided rug disappearing under cheerful debris, the furniture pushed back to accommodate the chaos, the morning light coming through curtains that no one had thought to open properly yet. The family would later describe the day as magical.

The toddler has not yet formed an opinion about the occasion but has formed a very firm one about the object in his mouth. Every toy within reach has been evaluated and rejected in favor of this. The manufacturers of the pull toy with its careful engineering and painted wooden beads would have found this outcome instructive.
