On the image

Christmas is somewhere in the room — pine boughs and blue tapers sit on top of the piano, and a glass of something has been set on the key ledge with the casual confidence of a person who does not own the instrument. The young man at the keys is working through sheet music with the focused look of someone who learned enough to be asked to play at family gatherings and has not yet found a way out of the obligation.

The piano itself is the real statement — a heavily carved Victorian upright that some earlier generation acquired as proof of household respectability, and that has since become furniture. By the 1950s these instruments had been in American parlors long enough to feel like wallpaper, which is probably why nobody moved the ashtray before taking the picture.

He plays on, in a white t-shirt and chinos, in a living room hung with floral drapes, in a decade that still believed learning to play the piano was a practical life skill rather than a charming anachronism.
