Two of the men are wearing boutonnieres, which in the 1950s was not something you did by accident. This is a wedding party in someone's living room, the kind of modest American reception where the floral curtains already counted as decoration and a card table stacked with wrapped gifts served as the gift table, the bar, and the focal point of the room all at once.
The older man at the left has the settled patience of someone who has attended enough of these to stop wondering when the food will arrive. The younger man in glasses sits nearest the camera with a girl perched beside him, both of them aimed at something off to the side — almost certainly whoever is cutting the cake, which would explain why no one is talking.
The crocheted wall hanging behind them, the venetian blinds, the bold floral print: every surface is doing its era's idea of a festive interior. The people inside it are waiting for the part of the afternoon that will be worth remembering, with no way to know that the part worth remembering is this.
