She is fully dressed for an evening out and standing in her own living room, which means she is waiting for someone who is not yet ready. The navy velvet dress, pearl necklace, clip earrings, white gloves, and matching handbag represent the complete mid-1950s formula for a woman who took going out seriously, a formula that required roughly as much preparation as a minor military operation. The room she is standing in is doing its own kind of work: the fringed armchair, the floral drapes, the ornate ceramic lamp, and the small porcelain figurine on the end table are every piece of furniture a decade convinced that more was more. To her right sits a console television in a wood cabinet, the household's most expensive and most socially significant object, the thing guests were supposed to notice. The gloves are the detail that dates her most precisely — by 1960 they would begin their long retreat from everyday evening wear, but here they are still non-negotiable, the last item put on before stepping out the door and the clearest signal that a woman knew how things were done.
