On the image

Sometime in the 1950s, a young couple arranged themselves in front of their fireplace for the wedding portrait that would go into the album, the bride in a full-skirted gown with a cathedral veil and the groom in a navy tuxedo with a carnation boutonnière, both of them slightly blurred because the relative with the camera had not yet mastered the exposure time required for indoor color film. The setting tells the real story: they posed not at the church or the reception hall but at home, in front of a green wall, a sailing-scene oil painting, and a pair of Staffordshire-style mantel dogs, which in the 1950s constituted a completely dignified backdrop for a moment this important. A rifle or shotgun leaned against the fireplace surround to the right, apparently belonging there so naturally that no one thought to move it before calling the couple to their mark. The whole arrangement reflects a decade that had not yet invented the concept of a dedicated wedding venue and assumed that a freshly painted living room was the obvious answer. They are smiling the slightly overwhelmed smile of people who have just done something permanent and are now being asked to hold still.
