A girl of about ten stands in a living room dressed in a full-length red wool coat and a small white hat, posed with one hand gesturing outward in the manner of someone who has been told to show off the outfit. In the 1950s, a new coat was an occasion, and the living room was the obvious stage — neutral ground between the bedroom where you put it on and the door where you left for church. Her mother has arranged the scene carefully: the good furniture, the fringed chair, the porcelain figurines on the tiered side table, all of it signaling that this household takes presentation seriously. Behind the girl, a console television set occupies the room's place of honor with the quiet authority of something that had only recently arrived and not yet been taken for granted. She is performing competence at being dressed up, which is a skill the 1950s required children to practice, and the expression on her face suggests she has not yet decided whether she finds it reasonable.
