On the image
A girl of about seven sits in her pajamas in the front room of a 1950s American house, hands folded with the careful composure of a child who has been told to hold still for the camera. The end table beside her is doing what end tables were expected to do in that decade: holding a ceramic lamp, a porcelain figurine bouquet, and a small angel statuette on the lower shelf, because the living room was the room you curated for company and every surface was an opportunity. The pajamas have red trim and a printed pattern of rearing horses — the kind of garment purchased with an idea about what little girls should find delightful. Her hair is braided and pinned up, which means someone prepared her for this picture as deliberately as they arranged the figurines. The whole room is performing domesticity for the camera, and the girl has understood her role in the performance well enough to sit exactly as still as the porcelain.
