Sometime in the 1950s, a family decided that the correct way to mark a special occasion — Easter, most likely, given the yellow flower and the satin dress with its lace Peter Pan collar — was to sit the child in the good room and take her picture before anything could go wrong. The room itself is a catalogue of mid-decade domestic aspiration: a green brocade sofa that no one was allowed to sit on unsupervised, a kidney-shaped lamp table bearing a ceramic figurine that existed purely to be dusted, and a floor lamp with a watered-silk shade trimmed in gold that meant the family had arrived somewhere, even if the textured wallpaper had already started to show its age. The girl sits precisely at the edge of the cushion the way she has been positioned rather than chosen, white ankle boots not quite touching the floor, holding the flower with the careful grip of a child who has been told twice not to drop it. She does not look like she is enjoying her outfit, which is the universal condition of children placed inside their parents' sense of occasion.
