A girl of about twelve sits on a teal damask sofa in a modest living room, wearing a floral print dress with a pink ribbon sash, holding what appears to be a small yellow object. Next to her stands a wooden pedestal table supporting an ornate ceramic lamp with a pleated shade — the sort of fixture that announced a home had moved beyond utility into taste. The lamp is the room's main claim to refinement, a piece that required careful dusting and suggested the family understood what a living room was supposed to accomplish: display. The girl sits composed and patient, the way children did when a parent or visiting relative wanted to take a photograph, her posture and stillness the domestic equivalent of holding still for the official portrait. She wears her good dress for this, indoors, in daylight, because a camera in the house was still an event worth dressing for. The lamp behind her will be obsolete within a decade; the sofa will be replaced; but the girl has absorbed the message that some objects in a home were meant to be seen.
