On the image
A young woman in a black short-sleeve blouse sits on a dark green upholstered sofa, one arm draped along its back, and looks at the camera with the particular composed neutrality that 1950s subjects adopted when someone pointed a camera at them — not quite smiling, not quite bored, simply waiting for the procedure to be over. Behind her, a ceramic table lamp with a scalloped shade rises from a dark painted base, the kind of lamp that appeared in every American living room of the decade because good taste had not yet arrived to prevent it. The wallpaper is a pale textured grid, practical and forgettable, and a dark window above and to her right reflects nothing but the night outside, confirming this was an evening occasion significant enough to warrant a photograph. Someone believed this room, this woman, this lamp represented the achieved domestic standard of the postwar middle class, and the camera dutifully agreed. The lamp has since been retired, the sofa reupholstered out of existence, and the wallpaper stripped, but the expression on her face — tolerant, slightly skeptical — has survived every decade without revision.
