A small child sits on a dark patterned sofa in a modestly furnished living room, holding what appears to be a toy or doll. Behind the sofa stands an ornamental table lamp with an elaborately decorated ceramic or plaster base and a pleated fabric shade, the kind of decorative object that announced domestic aspiration in postwar American homes. The lamp is the room's statement piece—expensive-looking, fussy, precisely the thing a householder would position where guests would see it. A man watches from a doorway at the back, possibly the father, possibly the photographer; the child does not regard the camera, which means no one particularly arranged this moment for its sake. The wallpaper is plain and institutional, suggesting either new construction or a rental—the lamp on its table was the family's contribution to making the space feel owned. This is what people bought when they had a little money and wanted the world to know they were building something: a lamp nobody needed, positioned on a surface nobody used, proof of arrival.
