Christmas came to every American living room in the 1950s with the same basic equipment: a sofa, heavy drape curtains that blocked the cold, and a string of large-bulb lights that glowed like small promises. A young woman reclines here with the easy confidence of someone who has finished wrapping everything and has decided, correctly, that the rest of the evening belongs to her.

The warm cast thrown by the tree lights has turned the whole room gold-green, which is what happened when you pointed a color camera at incandescent Christmas bulbs indoors with no flash — a technical limitation that families accepted as atmosphere and that now reads as pure decade. She is smiling at whoever is holding the camera, which means someone thought this moment worth keeping.

The 1950s had a very specific idea of domestic leisure: it looked exactly like this, a person at rest inside a room made deliberately cozy against the winter, the tree a standing argument that everything was fine.
