A girl of about ten stands in a studio or indoor display space dressed in a coordinated outfit: an orange printed vest over a turquoise long-sleeved shirt, navy pants, and plaid socks with orange shoes. She wears her hair in the rolled-wave style that was standard for children's formal dress in the 1950s. Behind her hang curtains of silver beaded fringe, a common backdrop for children's fashion photography and department-store displays of the era. To her left sits a small potted plant on a wooden shelf. The scene has the deliberate staging and bright color saturation of color slide film. She stands with the composed posture of a child who has been told to hold still and smile for the camera, and her expression suggests she has learned, already, what was expected: to demonstrate that a child could look like a small adult in the right clothes, which was the entire point of dressing children this way.
