Two girls stand beside a Christmas tree decorated in the manner that defined the postwar American holiday: a dark evergreen almost entirely encased in silver tinsel, hung thick enough to obscure the branches beneath, with colored glass balls catching whatever light reached them through the strands. The tinsel was applied one strand at a time, a labor-intensive task that made each tree a small monument to maternal patience, and the girls wear pajamas decorated with the same print pattern as each other—a practical efficiency that also signaled a certain conformity in domestic life. Behind them the living room window is dressed with swags of fabric printed with fruit and garland, as if the window itself needed to perform the season. The tree sits in what appears to be a corner of a modest home, its dark silhouette rendered nearly featureless by the weight of tinsel, which was the entire point: tinsel was purchased by the box and applied until the tree ceased to look like a tree and became instead a gleaming monument to abundance, a visual proof that the depression was over and families could afford to bury an evergreen in reflective waste. By the 1970s, people would begin to find tinsel tedious, and by the 1980s it would be understood as garish, but in this moment it represented aspiration rendered into labor—the tree that took hours to decorate, that you could not vacuum up afterward, that announced to visitors that this household had committed fully to the idea of Christmas as an industrial process.
