Two girls in matching plaid coats stand behind a folding table draped in blue cloth, presiding over a display of handmade crafts — a painted birdhouse, a toy drum, small figurines, a miniature American flag — at what is clearly a school or community fair held on a manicured lawn. The girl in front wears a yellow straw hat trimmed with flowers, the period's standard-issue signal that this is a dressed occasion, not a Tuesday. Behind them, a row of canvas tepees has been erected across the field, the era's standard prop for teaching children about Native Americans in a way that involved neither accuracy nor discomfort. A Dumbo carnival display peeks from the right edge, placing this squarely in the years when Disney imagery had fully colonized American childhood. The girls are standing very straight, in the manner of people who have been told that someone important might be watching. Everything on the table was made by hand, judged by a teacher, and assigned a ribbon, which was the 1950s theory of how character was built.
