A summer fair has been set up on a suburban lawn, with blue-draped tables selling toys and novelties, a small model teepee on display, and a large 48-star American flag flying from a handheld pole — held aloft by a girl in a floral dress who is simultaneously managing a stuffed animal and a spare jacket, because no patriotic occasion in the 1950s was complete without also being slightly encumbered. The 48-star flag dates this to before Alaska's admission in January 1959, meaning this girl was celebrating a Union that still had one fewer state than she would have by her next birthday. A smaller girl in a straw hat stands at the yellow-draped table to the right, apparently waiting for someone to explain to her what the correct level of enthusiasm is supposed to be. The handmade props and volunteer-assembled tables mark this as a school or community fair rather than a municipal event — the kind organized by a committee of mothers who had strong opinions about table placement. Every detail here — the dress, the toys, the flag, the teepee as a craft project — is a faithful record of mid-century American childhood as it understood itself to be, which is the most revealing kind of record there is.
