Two girls in their Sunday best stand on a grass lawn surrounded by a field of miniature canvas teepees — the kind that a postwar Scout or Campfire Girls jamboree would have considered an educational tribute to Native American life, which was also a perfectly normal thing to do in the 1950s without a second thought. The older girl carries a plaid jacket and a wicker basket with the practiced burden of someone who has been told to hold everyone's things; the younger one wears a decorated straw hat and a powder-blue dress with puffed sleeves, looking as though she was dressed for church and redirected at the last moment to an outdoor fair. A small drum sits between them on the grass, the kind sold at souvenir stands to give the tableau a hint of authenticity. Dozens of the same teepees recede into the background, each painted with symbols and colors that someone in an organizing committee had decided were correct. The whole scene is a capsule of mid-century civic pageantry — the belief that culture could be transmitted through a craft tent and a costume on a Saturday afternoon in the park.
