He has dressed in a gray suit and a wide red tie to attend whatever this occasion is, and he has brought his camera, and he is smoking, because in the 1950s a man could do all three of these things simultaneously without anyone finding any of it remarkable. The camera hanging from his hands is a bulky postwar model, the kind that required deliberate effort and cost enough that carrying it announced serious photographic intent — which makes it quietly funny that someone else got to him first and caught him mid-cigarette before he could raise it.
This is the designated family photographer, a role that in the suburban 1950s fell to exactly one man per household, self-appointed, who attended every outdoor gathering equipped to document it. The chain-link fence, the clipped lawn, the dark American sedan parked at the curb — all of it is the stage set of postwar domestic life, assembled with complete confidence that this was how things were supposed to look.
He is smiling at whoever caught him off-guard, with the easy expression of someone who expected to be behind the camera and has decided to be a good sport about being in front of it. The whole arrangement lasted about thirty more years before the cigarette became controversial.
