She has come outside for exactly one purpose, and the purpose is the flower, not the coat, though the coat is doing most of the work in the photograph. A camellia bush trained up along wrought-iron railings was the kind of thing a certain generation of homeowner cultivated with the seriousness other people reserve for stock portfolios, on the theory that a well-placed shrub said something true about the household's character.
She reaches for a single bloom the way a jeweler reaches for a stone, which is to say with total confidence that this one is worth the interruption of her walk. The wool coat, buttoned to the throat despite whatever mild weather made the camellias bloom, belongs to a decade when women dressed for the possibility of being observed even while doing nothing more dramatic than checking a plant.
Nobody photographs a garden inspection unless the garden has been declared a success, and by the fullness of these blooms, someone had clearly decided it was time to document the achievement before winter took it back.
