Somewhere behind her, the terraced gardens of Montjuïc climb in wide grass panels embroidered with heraldic topiary, a display of civic horticultural ambition that Barcelona maintained with the seriousness of a nation-state announcing itself through shrubbery. She stands in front of all of it in cat-eye sunglasses and a headscarf, holding a camera of her own, which means someone else was pressed into service for the official record.

The 1950s American abroad operated under a specific protocol: find the grandest backdrop available, stand slightly off-center, and smile in a way that says the trip is going well. The topiary crests and symmetrical stone staircases of the Jardins de Laribal — or possibly the nearby Jardí Botànic terraces — were exactly the kind of monumental geometry that rewarded the effort of getting there before mass tourism made the effort feel ordinary.

She has dressed for a day of serious sightseeing — sleeveless blouse, dark skirt, sensible shoes — and the whole composition has the easy confidence of someone who has consulted a guidebook and arrived at the correct location. She will return home with slides. She will show them once.
