Sometime in the 1950s, a woman of retirement age settled herself at the edge of a formally planted Mediterranean garden — the kind maintained by a grand hotel or municipal authority on the French Riviera, where the flower beds are edged with the precision of a geometry lesson and the palm trees have been there longer than anyone working the grounds. She is dressed for an outing rather than a stroll: dark blazer, patterned blouse, patent handbag held in the lap with the particular grip of a woman who did not put things down in unfamiliar places. The flowering Judas tree behind her and the disciplined rows of alyssum and marigolds at her sides suggest late spring, the season when the Côte d'Azur was still the destination of the continental upper-middle class rather than the package-holiday crowd that the decade's cheap air travel was about to deliver. Someone — a travelling companion, almost certainly — positioned her there because the garden was worth commemorating and she was the proof that you had been to it. The composition captures, without quite meaning to, the postwar European idea that a woman in her seventies, properly dressed, seated before something beautiful, constituted a complete holiday report.
