Someone has spent the better part of a year growing these chrysanthemums and the better part of a week arranging them by colour into concentric waves, operating on the 1950s horticulture-show principle that nature improves dramatically when organised like a diagram. The small identification cards tucked among the blooms suggest this is a competitive exhibition — the kind where a panel of judges in tweed coats would spend a solemn morning debating whether a particular shade of coral constituted its own class or merely a substandard pink. The glasshouse structure looming behind the display was the era's preferred cathedral for this kind of endeavour, offering the twin advantages of dramatic interior scale and the permanent smell of damp compost. Every bloom is at peak condition, which means whoever took this had roughly a three-day window before the whole argument for human dominion over nature began visibly losing ground.
