The apparatus of civic celebration in the 1950s was a flower exhibition staged in a gymnasium, which meant someone had to haul in several hundred carnations and arrange them in regimented rows between the bleachers and the basketball hoops. The flower beds form a processional path down the center of the court, white and pink and orange blooms planted in military formation, the kind of display that required planning committees and volunteer labor and the casual belief that a school gymnasium could be temporarily repurposed as a horticultural exhibition without anyone finding the arrangement peculiar. The crowd in their dark coats stands along the sidelines in the amber-tinted light, watching what appears to be the official opening—a dignitary at a microphone, the moment that justified three months of organizational effort. This is the exact species of American community event that believed itself important and earnest, attended by people who showed up because attendance was what neighbors did, and left without quite remembering what they had seen.
