Whoever designed this garden had strong opinions about what a serious house deserved in front of it. The tiered flower beds step down from the residence in ranked formations — succulents at the base, then a bank of marigolds and mixed perennials, then clipped hedges framing a terrace with poolside umbrellas — the whole arrangement expressing the postwar conviction that nature, properly supervised, was an amenity.
The house behind it is the tell. That flat-roofed, cream-rendered cubic form with its horizontal ribbon windows is Streamline Moderne at full confidence, the architectural style that arrived in the 1930s promising the future and was still signaling prosperity two decades later to anyone wealthy enough to maintain a garden staff. The patio furniture and market umbrellas visible on the upper terrace suggest the house was by then treating itself less as a monument and more as a place to have lunch.
What the camera caught was a household in the comfortable middle of its own self-regard — a property that had been designed to impress and had, over twenty years, quietly shifted to impressing only its owners, which is generally a more sustainable arrangement.
