On the image

A modest white-walled house with a blue door and a small paved courtyard has been dressed up with the kind of determined landscaping that suggests someone read a magazine article about California living and decided their Spanish colonial cottage needed to perform that role. Climbing jasmine and ivy have been trained across the facade with the precision of a woman who visits on weekends with pruning shears, confident that enough greenery will transform the ordinary into the charming. Two metal lawn chairs wait in the shade like guests at a party that hasn't started yet, and a potted plant sits alone on the paving stones as though marking the exact spot where leisure is supposed to happen. The bright sunlight bleaches the courtyard floor in a way that makes clear this is a space designed to be looked at and occasionally walked through, not actually used, because nobody sits outside in that particular heat. By 1950s standards this is the dream of a modest household: a white house, a private entrance, and enough control over the surroundings to make it yours.
