A gardener's handiwork in the 1950s lay along this border—silver-dusty foliage plants studded with yellow blooms in the geometric confidence of postwar landscape design, when the idea of the garden became something you could control and perfect through enough order and the right plant combinations. The lawn stretches flat and clear, the architecture looms beyond in ivy-draped shadow, and the whole arrangement speaks to the amateur horticulturist's faith that a neat edge, a dusted silver border, and a line of flowers in single file would compose something worth looking at. The tallest spikes were likely delphinium or similar height-markers chosen to prove the border had depth and seriousness. Someone spent three seasons learning which silvery-leaved plant would not sprawl, which yellow would hold its own against the weak afternoon light, and which would survive the season and come again next year. The result sits here, orderly and doomed—the moment right before the foliage got leggy and the yellow faded and someone decided to start over.
