Somewhere in the 1950s, a group of women had discovered that the best place to have lunch was inside a glass-roofed conservatory so thoroughly colonised by hanging baskets and potted blooms that a classical bust was simply absorbed into the floral scenery as décor. The conservatory tearoom — a peculiarly mid-century institution that asked you to eat a sandwich while surrounded by several hundred dollars' worth of marigolds and ferns — operated on the belief that proximity to nature improved the digestion. A woman on the left attends to the plants with the focused authority of someone whose job title was never quite agreed upon, while two guests seat themselves at a dark table as if this level of botanical ambition were perfectly ordinary. The leaded-glass windows behind them and the steel-and-glass roof overhead place this firmly in the tradition of grand Victorian conservatories repurposed, by the postwar decade, into spaces where respectable women could have a proper afternoon out without anyone calling it frivolous. The genius of the concept was that you were technically outdoors and indoors at the same time, which meant nobody had to decide.
