Four women in their good clothes cross a gravel yard toward a full-length mirror bolted to the outside wall of what looks like a guest cabin, the kind of budget lodging where personal grooming happened in public because the buildings themselves had no room to spare for it. The dark Chevrolet sedan parked behind them did the driving; the mirror does the finishing touch, the last checkpoint before whatever lunch, church service, or family visit required matching pocketbooks and clean shoes.
Generation shows itself plainly here. The older woman in the headscarf and shawl dresses for weather that isn't especially cold, on the theory that a woman of her age has earned the right to bundle up regardless of season, while the younger one in the floral print has clearly decided the outing calls for something closer to fashion. Between them a third woman studies her handbag as though counting its contents one more time, the universal gesture of someone who has already checked twice.
The woman in purple, caught mid-glance in the mirror itself, adjusts her bag with the unhurried calm of someone long past caring who watches her do it. Outdoor mirrors like this one were a fixture of postwar auto-court life, installed by owners who understood that guests would rather primp in daylight than squint at a cloudy bathroom fixture indoors.
