Easter in the 1950s operated as a second Christmas, except instead of gifts the occasion demanded that everyone appear on a lawn in their best clothes and be photographed before anything could be eaten. The man in the center has committed fully to the occasion with a wide-brimmed dress hat and a brown suit, hands in pockets, the posture of a man who has been told he looks nice and is willing to accept that verdict without further comment. The woman on his left holds a small white bundle — almost certainly a kitten or a puppy — with the careful grip of someone who understands it could ruin the outfit.
The full skirts on both women date this to the mid-decade silhouette that required about twice the fabric of anything worn before or since, which was generally understood as evidence of prosperity. The woman on the right has added cat-eye sunglasses and a small hat pinned at an angle that required a mirror and a decision. They are standing in front of a chain-link fence in a subdivision that is probably no more than five years old, the kind of neighborhood where every house had a rose bed by the property line and a driveway made of the same black asphalt.
The photographer positioned them with their backs to the street so the house across the road would read as background rather than distraction, which is the 1950s in one compositional choice: make the ordinary look like it was always supposed to be exactly this way.
