The mailbox sign behind the chain-link fence reads "The Odoms" with a house number, which means this is the kind of occasion the Odoms dressed up for — a corsage on the young woman in the center, a gift tucked under her arm, and a man in a dark suit with a tie that says Sunday, not Tuesday. In the 1950s, the modest ranch house visible across the street represented everything a generation had worked toward: a yard, a fence, a named property, the whole postwar package of arrival.
The three of them have lined up along the fence in the practiced formation of people who know a camera is about to go off and have opinions about where to stand. The older woman in the beret and cat-eye glasses carries a small gift box with a bow, which is the clearest possible signal that someone is being celebrated — graduation or birthday being the leading candidates, with the corsage leaning toward the former. The young woman in the pale green skirt suit has the expression of someone whose day is going very well and who has decided not to ruin it by showing it too much.
The rose bushes along the fence are in bloom, the lawn is immaculate, and the whole scene is a portrait of a family that maintained things — the yard, the occasion, the standards — with the quiet conviction that this was simply what you did.
