A woman in a printed house dress and cat-eye glasses poses beside what appears to be a mid-1950s Chevrolet two-tone sedan with her two sons, both buttoned and bow-tied into their Sunday best, which in the 1950s was simply called getting dressed. The street behind them is a postwar subdivision in winter, all bare trees and identical ranch houses set at identical distances from identical curbs — the landscape that resulted when an entire nation decided simultaneously that the good life looked like this, and built it as fast as lumber could arrive. The car is the real statement: navy and white, chrome trim, parked in front of the house rather than in the garage because a car this presentable deserved to be seen. She holds a small structured handbag with the particular grip of someone who has been asked to stand still for a photograph and is performing composure rather than feeling it. The older boy smiles; the younger one has already concluded that this is taking too long. The whole scene is a formal portrait of a family that did not think of itself as posing for history, which is exactly why it did.
