A young mother in a white camp-collar blouse holds her small daughter against her hip beside the chrome-trimmed fin of a two-tone American sedan, the kind of car that in the 1950s signalled that a family had arrived at the precise life they had been promised. The little girl, in a teal smocked dress that took someone considerable effort to iron, has planted one hand on her mother's shoulder with the proprietary confidence of a toddler who has not yet learned that she is not in charge. This is a Sunday-afternoon snapshot, taken in a driveway or a church parking lot somewhere in suburban America, the low ranch-style roofline just visible through the trees behind them, representing the whole postwar thesis that a quarter-acre lot and a reliable automobile constituted the good life. The mother is smiling at her daughter rather than the camera, which makes the picture feel accidental in the best sense — someone caught a real moment instead of a posed one, a minor miracle in an era when the instruction 'everybody look here' was treated as a commandment. What neither of them could know, standing next to that enormous car in their careful clothes, was that within a decade the daughter would inherit a world that had decided the whole arrangement was more complicated than it looked.
