Something is being handed over — a small gift, a piece of paper, possibly a casserole dish — and the whole group has organized itself around the transaction with the gentle ceremony that 1950s American social life required even of informal occasions. The women are dressed as women dressed when leaving the house meant presenting yourself: cotton shirtwaists, floral prints, a headscarf knotted against the wind off what looks like a Northern California coastal corridor, the eucalyptus giving it away.

The cars parked behind them are early-to-mid-1950s American sedans, broad and confident, the kind of machinery that suggested the future had already arrived and was shaped like a Chevrolet. The low stucco building to the right and the wood-sided structure behind them read as the back edge of a small-town commercial or civic block — not a backyard, but not quite a formal venue either, the kind of space that existed because postwar California was building faster than it was finishing.

Whatever the occasion — a church auxiliary, a farewell, a committee dissolving after a completed project — the group has achieved the specific quality of women who know each other well enough to stand close but are still being slightly correct for the camera. The child at the center, drawn into the handoff, is the only one not performing composure.
