Every family vacation in the 1960s had one stop like this: a historic marker, a patient child, and a parent convinced that standing next to the sign counted as absorbing the history. The girl in the checked jumper has arranged herself dutifully beside the bronze plaque, hands folded, the way children were taught to pose for anything educational, whether or not they understood a word of it.

The plaque itself does the heavy lifting the girl never will, reciting a century and a half of Pennsylvania iron-making in a single dense paragraph: built in 1742, run by one family until 1883, handed over to the Commonwealth in 1932 by a great-granddaughter with a sense of occasion. None of that mattered to a child on a summer road trip, for whom the only fact worth retaining was that this was the place they stopped before lunch.

Someone framed the shot carefully enough to get both the girl and the full text of the marker in focus, on the theory that a vacation photograph should also function as a history lesson decades later. It mostly worked, since the plaque is still perfectly legible and the girl's expression suggests she would rather be anywhere with a swimming pool.
