Somebody handed a small boy a snack and told him to hold still, and he compromised by grinning instead. He is dressed in the standard uniform of a 1950s toddler on a warm afternoon, cotton shorts and a plain white shirt, an outfit chosen by a mother who had learned that anything more elaborate would not survive the next hour outdoors.

Behind him the street does the quiet work of dating the picture better than he can. A boxy sedan with the rounded fenders and modest chrome of the era sits parked at the curb, the kind of car a family bought once and kept for a decade, and the low brick house with its aluminum awning belongs to the same postwar subdivision logic, a street of near-identical homes built fast to house near-identical hopes.

The lawn has been mowed with the seriousness of a man who believed a straight lawn reflected a straight character, and the shrubs along the walk are trimmed into the tidy anonymity that passed for landscaping before anyone had heard the word 'natural.' None of it was staged for permanence. It just happened to be standing there the one afternoon someone decided this particular smile was worth the cost of a roll of film.
