Postwar America had a plan for the front yard, and the plan was evergreen shrubs. The conical juniper centered behind this toddler was the decade's default landscaping choice, planted by the millions in front of brick ranch houses from Ohio to Oregon by men who had recently survived a world war and were now extremely focused on curb appeal. The house number staked in the lawn — the kind of small cast-metal address marker sold at every hardware counter — confirms that someone here took the presentation of domestic order seriously.

The child has not yet received the memo about standing still for portraits. He's mid-turn, clutching something small and yellow, grinning at whoever is behind the camera with the expression of a person who has just done something worth photographing and knows it. The whole arrangement — tidy shrubs, brick facade, trimmed boxwoods — is the 1950s vision of the good life made concrete, and the toddler in the center of it is the point of all of it.

This is how a generation documented childhood: not in hospitals or studios, but in the front yard, with the house behind the kid to prove the house existed.
