Three women in summer dresses stand posed in front of a modernist shopping center, a blue spruce anchoring a planter bed behind them. The architecture—flat overhang, clean lines, plate glass—reads as the confident commercial optimism of the early 1950s, when shopping centers were still novel enough to be destinations, places you dressed up to visit. The women are arranged as though for a formal photograph, a family or friends record, holding still for someone with a camera on what appears to be a clear day. In the background, a parking lot stretches toward other low-slung commercial buildings and utility poles. The spruce is planted as civic ornament, evidence that this new kind of place was supposed to feel thoughtful, landscaped, worthy of the trip from home. The photograph has faded to the color palette of Kodachrome left too long in the light, which is what happened to most color slides from this era—they were taken to be shown once, forgotten in a box, and slowly bleached by time into this particular blue and amber tint.
