Three girls in Sunday dresses stand among yellow flowers and potted palms inside what appears to be a public greenhouse or conservatory, while other visitors move through the background. The girls have been brought here as an outing, dressed in pastels and hair ribbons, the kind of errand that rated formal clothing in an era when a visit to see tropical plants under glass was a legitimate way to spend a family afternoon. Behind them, adults in their own best clothes browse the same displays with the seriousness of people visiting a small museum. The greenhouse was one of the few places a working family could see something genuinely foreign without leaving town, and it cost almost nothing, which meant it filled with the kind of crowd that took it seriously.
