Two girls in light print dresses sit on a bench outside a storefront on a sunny afternoon, the older one turned toward the younger in a pose that suggests she is explaining something or keeping her company. Behind them a supermarket entrance and parking lot stretch across the frame, lined with the rounded sedans of the era, and the street beyond shows the flat architectural confidence of postwar American commerce. The bench sits directly on the sidewalk with no barrier between pedestrian and vehicle traffic, a proximity that would later be remedied by planners who decided risk assessment belonged between a child and a parking lot. No one is watching them closely; the scene has the casual permission of an era when shopping centers were destinations for families and children could be set down on a bench while errands were run. The older girl's hand rests on the younger one's knee in a gesture of mild authority or reassurance, the kind of thing an eight-year-old might offer a five-year-old to mark herself as temporarily in charge, a contract that lasted only as long as the parents stayed in the store.
