Two girls stand on a concrete sidewalk in front of a brick residential building in what appears to be a Midwestern suburb, both dressed in white or pale cotton dresses with dark belts, the younger one in ankle socks and the older in saddle shoes, posed for a photograph as casually as people posed for photographs when film was expensive and every exposure had to count. The street behind them is empty of traffic; the lawns are geometric and flat; the trees are saplings secured to stakes, still working on becoming the neighborhood's permanent shade. Nothing in the scene suggests these girls are going anywhere or doing anything except standing still long enough to be remembered, which was how families documented themselves before documentation became continuous and automatic. This is what it meant to have your picture taken: you put on your best dress and stood where you were told, and the photograph that resulted was assumed to be important enough to keep forever, an assumption that proved correct only by accident.
