A small blonde girl in a white playsuit stands on the front lawn of a brick bungalow, squinting into the sun with the mildly suspicious expression children reserve for adults who have interrupted something more interesting. The house behind her is a tidy specimen of mid-century American residential aspiration: red brick, blue-painted trim, a window box planted with geraniums, and matching rose shrubs flanking the front steps with the symmetry that 1950s homeowners treated as a moral virtue. A pinwheel has been stuck into the window box, which was the era's answer to yard art. Somewhere behind the camera, a parent had decided this was the moment — the lawn freshly mowed, the flowers in bloom, the child approximately clean — and pressed the shutter on what they understood to be a document of domestic success. The girl does not look like she got a vote.
