A girl of about seven or eight stands at attention on the front walk of a brick bungalow, dressed in a matching blue sleeveless top and pedal pushers — the 1950s children's fashion industry having decided that coordinated sets were the solution to a problem no child had ever identified. She wears cat-eye glasses and carries what looks like a small purse, because someone decided this was an occasion worth dressing for, possibly the first day of school. Behind her the porch is trimmed in bright blue paint, a window box holds geraniums, and a pinwheel turns in the right corner — the full vocabulary of midcentury American residential optimism, all present and accounted for. The roses along the porch wall are in full bloom, which places this in summer, likely August or early September. Every element of the scene broadcasts that the family on this block had arrived at a decent life and wanted the camera to know it.
